New York Police receives first Bell 429 helicopter

Bell Helicopter has delivered the New York Police Department’s (NYPD) first of the four twin-engine light Bell 429 helicopters, to be deployed for airborne law enforcement patrolling.

The latest helicopter adds to the already delivered Bell 407 in May, which is being used as a training aircraft for the fleet.
NYPD Aviation Unit commanding officer deputy inspector James Coan said: "We are extremely happy with our choice of the Bell 429 twin-engine light helicopter.

"Thanks to the partnership between Bell Helicopter and Helinet Technologies, this aircraft provides us with perhaps the most advanced law enforcement sensor suite available at this time."

Upon the completion of all deliveries, the Bell 429s will fly together with two Bell 412EPs for a range of missions, including search and rescue at sea; collecting intelligence and combating terrorism.

With more than 450 Bell helicopters serving in a law enforcement/parapublic role in the US, Bell is planning to deliver all the remaining 429 aircraft to NYPD by next year.

Bell Helicopter North American sales managing director Anthony Moreland said: "Since we introduced the Bell 429, we have seen the global law enforcement community embrace the unique capabilities of this aircraft for their missions.

"We look forward to completing our final deliveries in the coming months and then seeing how the NYPD will use these helicopters to best serve the people of New York City."

Integrating an enhanced glass cockpit, advanced drive system and improved WAAS navigation and IFR capability, the Bell 429 also boasts more cabin space, flat flooring and seating for seven passengers and one flight crew.

The helicopter’s 60-inch wide side doors, in addition to optional rear clam-shell doors offer rapid and easy access for flight officers during emergencies.
