USCG’s Station Manasquan to undergo refurbishment

The US Federal Government planning to invest about $14m to upgrade the US Coast Guard’s (USCG) station Manasquan Inlet, in a bid to defend it from future storms such as superstorm Sandy.

To be funded through the $60bn Disaster Relief Appropriations Act, the latest transformation forms part of a redevelopment plan to consolidate all the station’s operations into a new 19,100ft2, three-story building, while the administration office would be at the samelocation.

Manasquan Inlet station executive petty Elena Soini was quoted by Asbury Park Press as saying that right now, there are three separate buildings for the operation.

"This was a plan that has been in the works for years," Soini added.

The latest funding forms part of the overall allocated $144m for the US Coast Guard.

While the contract for the project is anticipated to be awarded on 7 August, work on the station would commence in early 2015.

As part of the modernisation plan, the Manasquan Inlet station will also be equipped with a generator, which would allow operations for up to two weeks without electricity.

The Manasquan Inlet station comprises a crew of 35 men and women, who are responsible to deal with 600 search and rescue cases every year.
