Iran may use drones to boost border security

Iran is planning to allow its forces to use unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) for patrolling, in a bid to boost security at the nation’s borders.

The country is also in the process of signing contracts with manufacturing firms for the supply of drones.

Iranian Border Guards Units commander general Hossein Zolfaqari was quoted by FNA as saying: "We are in the process of signing contracts with the manufacturing companies to use drones for protecting the country’s borders."

Last year in March, Iranian border guards started experimenting using UAVs for patrolling the Eastern borders, and now the country plans to use them to patrol borders.

"The implementation of this project has begun in South Khorasan and Sistan and Baluchestan Provinces, and multiple daily flights are conducted to evaluate the performance of the drones," Zolfaqari added.

Iran also revealed plans to update its monitoring system at the borders in April, with work on it scheduled to commence after the allocation of required funding by the parliament.

In addition to help better control border conditions and movements, the online observation capability of border monitoring systems would also notify the border checkpoints over their weak performance.

Upon the installation of the monitoring systems, electronic watch towers will be established down the length of the borders as well.
