Battelle introduces new chemical and biological hazard sensor system

Battelle has launched the new chemical and biological hazard sensor system that assists in biodefense and hazard avoidance.

Claimed to operate at a fraction of the cost of current technologies, the new Resource Effective BioIdentification System (REBS) is being offered for US Department of Defense (DoD), homeland security, and other federal biodefence schemes, in addition to commercial industries for pollutant detection.

The battery-powered system incorporates a new ‘smart technology’ that eliminates the need for perishable reagents, further bringing down the operating costs to below less than $1 per day per unit.

Battelle CBRNE Defense business unit vice president and general manager Matthew Shaw said the new technology offers warfighters, first responders, security personnel, and many in industry, with affordable, high tech detection system capable of identifying new biological and chemical materials quickly, no matter the environment.

"Its elegant, automated design eliminates the need for constant maintenance and support, saving an estimated $56 million for every 1,000 units," Shaw said.

Capable of being installed in a fixed site or deployed in mobile apps, the new technology can be used as a single or as a multiple system array configured into a network and can be operated, monitored, and updated via the internet.

REBS can operate continuously, without operator interference, for weeks at a time, reducing users’ burden of constantly purchasing and refilling the system with chemistries and consumables.

The new system is also claimed to reduce the time taken to detect agents and offer early warning and valuable supervision to the client.
