Chemring to supply chemical detectors to US Army

The US Army Contracting Command has awarded a contract to Chemring Detection Systems to build and deliver the next generation chemical detectors (NGCD).

The three cost-plus-incentive-fee contracts worth $3.9m also involves options, which if exercised would bring the overall contract value to $21.3m.

Work under the NGCD Technology Development programme will be carried out at Chemring Detection Systems’ Charlotte facility in North Carolina, US.

Chemring Sensors & Electronic Systems president Tom Thebes said: "These awards are a reflection of the innovative and cost-effective solutions being developed and proposed by our NGCD Program Team.

"More importantly, these sensors will provide enhanced capabilities in protecting both our soldiers and civilians from the growing threat of chemical and other toxic agents that our enemies use around the world."

Chemring will be responsible for building three NGCD variants that include a multi-sample identifier, a surface contaminant locator, and a platform/site air monitor.

The NGCD programme is being executed by the Joint Project Manager for Nuclear, Biological, and Chemical Contamination Avoidance (JPM NBC CA) in a bid to pile up identified operational gaps in chemical detection.

Being developed to detect, identify, quantify, alarm to and report on a range of chemical species in any phase of matter, the new detectors will potentially support multiple mission events such as Chemical Release, Site Assessment, and Decontamination.
