Cochin Shipyard launches tenth FPV for Indian Coast Guard

Cochin Shipyard (CSL) has launched the tenth of 20 fast patrol vessels (FPVs) proposed for Indian Coast Guard (ICG).

Being built as part of $338m contract signed in October 2010, the FPVs are proficient in carrying out missions such as anti-smuggling, anti-piracy, fisheries protection, search and rescue (SAR), exclusive economic zone (EEZ) surveillance, and coastal patrol.

Integrating latest weaponry and advanced communication and navigational equipments, the FPVs can be deployed as communication and escort platforms in the event of hostile and wartime situations while operating in Indian coastal waters and neighbouring island territories.

Powered by water jets to cruise at a speed of 33k, the 50m-long and 7.6m-wide vessels also integrate special features such as integrated bridge management system (IBMS), integrated machinery control system (IMCS) and an integrated gun mount with indigenous fire control system (FCS).

So far, the shipyard has delivered seven vessels in the 20 vessel series, with the eighth vessel currently being prepared for sea trials.

The shipyard has also laid the keel for the 11th vessel.

During 2013-2014, CSL successfully delivered five FPVs to ICG, in addition to two high end platform supply vessels to Norwegian owners.

Cochin yard is also building the Indian Navy’s aircraft carrier; an offshore support vessel for Norwegian owner and a buoy tender vessel for Directorate of Light Houses and Light Ships, the Indian Government.
