Ford delivers surveillance mode technology for military applications

Ford has launched its surveillance mode technology for a range of military applications to beef up adoption as well as to defend law enforcement officers and military personnel.

Developed in collaboration with InterMotive and initially launched on 2014 Ford Police Interceptor, the surveillance technology is mainly aimed at warning law enforcement officers of sudden approaches from behind the vehicle.

Using the vehicles’ already integrated rear-view camera and radar, the system detects a person or vehicle approaching from behind and automatically alerts; furls the driver’s side window; lock all doors and flashes exterior lighting.

Ford police and ambulance special vehicle engineering supervisor Randy Freiburger said: "We want to assist with and improve the security of all police officers – whether they are using a Ford Police Interceptor or a competitive vehicle.

"Combining existing Ford technologies with the development of a new control module and software has created an innovative system that improves security for police officers while they are in their vehicles."

Ford’s surveillance technology would join officers’ already existing efforts such as writing reports, monitor their in-car computer or radar and perform other tasks within their vehicles, and deliver them additional set of eyes to help protect against threats.

When activated, the system delivers additional situational awareness and a first line of defence from potential attackers.

Ford Global Technologies technology commercialisation and licensing director Chris Danowski said: "Since surveillance mode technology is also applicable to military use, Ford and InterMotive are showcasing it to various governmental agencies as well."
