IDF to unveil smartphone missile alert application

The IDF Home Front Command is all set to release an application called iOref, which enables smartphone owners to receive emergency alerts for missile strikes based on their location.

By using the GPS location data on smartphones the application will deliver alerts and prompt civilians to head for protected zones during attacks, according to jpost.com.

In the absence of GPS data, an alternative technique will be used to track the location of the user to within 50m², and cell broadcasts from antennas to send messages, if cellphone networks collapse.

Said to be one of several Home Front Command developments, the application is said to ‘hibernate’ on the smartphone and gets activated when needed, after downloading.

Expected for release in three-and-a-half months, an initial version of the programme is scheduled for general release by the end of June 2014.

In addition, the Home Front Command further plans to create missile alerts that are area-specific, based on a projection of incoming projectiles’ path.

A new system will be launched within two years in order to track the location of developments as well as emergency responders using a digital map in real-time.

By joining a national radio network already in place, the system allows the Home Front Command to communicate directly with emergency services.

The radio network will also be expanded to include other forces such as Military Police and the IDF’s Technological and Logistics Directorate that are deemed vital in handling emergencies.
