Rockwell to equip USCG’s MH-65E fleet with RSS

The US Coast Guard has awarded a contract to Rockwell Collins to provide the MH-65E radar sensor system (RSS) for 102 MH-65E aircraft.

Under the contract, Rockwell Collins will provide an enhanced RTA-4114 radar with a new maritime surface search mode and advanced ground clutter rejection algorithms to enhance radar’s ground mapping capability for shoreline and over water use.

The RTA-4114 multiscan weather radar has been designed to enhance ground/shoreline mapping while a new maritime surface search mode will provide lightweight, flexible, and supportable solution for the US Coast Guard.

Rockwell Collins Airborne Solutions vice president and general manager Troy Brunk said that the MultiScan’s solid state design offers high reliability and reduced life cycle costs which are vital in a cost-constrained budget environment.

"Coast Guard pilots will benefit from MultiScan’s broad array of capabilities that provide reduced workload and enhanced situational awareness," Brunk added.

Featuring automated tilt, clutter removal and gain management, the radar can automatically scan ahead of the aircraft and displays the actual weather threats using advanced digital processing and analysis algorithms.

The RTA-4114 MultiScan Weather Radar system represents a major step forward in automation for helicopter flight crews.

Designed to conduct search and rescue, law enforcement and homeland security missions, the MH-65 short range recovery (SRR) helicopter is certified for operation in all-weather and night-time operations, with the exception of icy conditions.
