Russia’s Caspian Flotilla to get two more Roadstead Cutters this year

Russia is set to add two new roadstead cutters, which are integrated with joystick handling, to its Caspian Flotilla by the end of 2014.

Both vessels are already moving towards the Caspian Sea, in a bid to complete remaining trials before being added to the Caspian Flotilla (CFl) in October or November.

The Southern Military District said in a statement: "Two new roadstead cutters of the Comprehensive Rescue Project 23040 with the new system of joystick handling started moving toward the Caspian Sea.

"Provided by tugs on the inner river routes, the vessels will pass about 1,500km [932 miles]."

Upon the successful completion of remaining state tests after their arrival at the CFl by late September, both vessels will be included into the flotilla once the Russian Navy commander-in-chief signs and approves documents, according to RIA Novosti.

Mainly aimed at performing a range of tasks during rescue operations on rivers and seas, the cutters from Project 23040 can precisely manoeuvre in all weather conditions using their new system of joystick handling.

Offering a cruising range of 200 miles at 10k speed, the roadstead cutters can carry an eight member crew for five days.
