Smiths Detection launches TRACE-PR for mobile screening

Smiths Detection has launched TRACE-PR, a non-radioactive Explosives Trace Detector (ETD) designed for mobile screening.

The compact and portable ETD will detect explosives from swabs that can be taken from people, objects and materials in any location.

TRACE-PRO is expected to detect common explosives in less than ten seconds and can be used by the military, emergency response, law enforcement and security professionals.

The new solution is equipped with in-built camera and GPS that will facilitate easy evidence collection by enabling the user to record and store data in the immediate location of the suspect substance.

TRACE-PRO’s unique probe-based sampling technique and reusable swabs allow users to take quick consecutive samples to enhance the speed and efficiency of the screening operation.

The solution is compliant with MIL-STD-810G and can be powered by AA commercial batteries while providing a low cost of ownership through its re-usable swabs and basic maintenance.

However, the company claims that the solution requires a minimal level of user training due to its intuitive software.

Smiths Detection Products and Technology vice-president Shan Hood said: "TRACE-PRO offers our customers a revolutionary way to detect and identify explosives with the added benefit of being able to record and store data when time is of the essence.

"It makes sampling and evidence collection easier – an enormous plus for our customers – and is technically superior to most other hand-held ETD detectors."

The company recently launched iCmore software suite for the automatic identification of suspicious items or dangerous threats, concealed within vehicles and maritime containers.

The company was contracted by General Dynamics UK to supply chemical agent detectors for the AJAX Programme for GBP6m approximately.
