US DHS selects Morpho for next-generation checked baggage EDS

The US Department of Homeland Security (DHS) Science and Technology Directorate (S&T) has awarded a contract to Morpho (Safran) to develop next-generation checked baggage explosives detection system (EDS).

Under the $10m contract, Morpho Detection will deliver a prototype EDS based on advanced X-ray diffraction (XRD) technology in 2015.

The company will utilise advanced XRD technology to detect liquid and homemade explosives and IEDs in checked baggage
The Morpho’s next-generation EDS will provide the detection and operational capabilities needed for airports to meet emerging threats while accommodating anticipated growth.

Morpho Detection technology and chief technology officer vice president Cameron Ritchie said the company will continue to work with the US government for developing explosives detection systems to meet current and emerging security threats.

"This contract is another example of our commitment to develop next-generation technology and deliver the most advanced solutions available to protect air travelers and streamline the security screening process," Ritchie added.

Morpho is currently developing the XRD-based XDi cabin baggage screening system for airport checkpoints and is due for commercial availability in 2015.

Capable of enhancing the passenger screening process, the XDi offers detection and throughput capabilities needed to lift current checkpoint liquids restrictions.

All Morpho EDS systems have met stringent requirements for both throughput and detection and achieved TSA certification.
