3M to deliver electronic monitoring services to New Zealand Department of Corrections

3M has been awarded a contract by the Department of Corrections in New Zealand to deliver electronic monitoring services across the sentences under the department’s oversight.

As part of what is claimed to be the largest electronic monitoring awards globally so far, 3M will provide the agency with a solution derived from GPS and radio frequency technologies intended to keep an eye on offenders and defendants.

Corrections Services national commissioner Jeremy Lightfoot said: "This is a significant contract, lasting until the end of the decade.

"The new 3M system will provide safety for the community by improving the management of offenders and those on bail, while enhancing rehabilitation outcomes."

3M’s GPS technology would assist the department in reaching its target of a 25% drop in reoffending by 2017, which would further result in safer communities for citizens in New Zealand.
