Canadian Coast Guard names new hovercraft

The Canadian Coast Guard has named new hovercraft as, CCGS Moytel, which is to be stationed at Sea Island in Richmond, British Columbia.

The new hovercraft has been shipped to British Columbia following completion of its construction and will soon travel to Sea Island.

The Coast Guard will commission the hovercraft, which will be accepted into the fleet following completion of Coast Guard staff training period and inspection to ensure the vessel’s optimal condition following shipping.

Minister of State (Seniors) Alice Wong said the investment in the CCGS Moytel hovercraft demonstrates the Canadian Government’s commitment to ensure the safety of fishermen, recreational boaters, and sailors in and around Vancouver Harbour.

"The name of the new vessel is in Halq’eméylem, in recognition of our First Nations’ contribution to the province’s history, culture and economy," Wong added.

The new hovercraft has been named Moytel, which is a Halq’emélem word meaning "to help each other", to promote Canadian sovereignty, culture, geography and history.

Replacing CCGS Penac, the CCGS Moytel heavy-duty and more versatile amphibious vehicle will be used for patrolling inland waters.
Featuring a bow ramp to allow transportation of supplies such as rescue equipment and vehicles, the vessel has a greater range of capabilities.

Since 2009, the Coast Guard had received six Hero-class mid-shore patrol vessels, the hovercraft CCGS Mamilossa, five search and rescue lifeboats; two specialty vessels; three near-shore fishery research vessels, 30 environmental barges and 60 small craft from the Government of Canada.
