Kromek to work with US DTRA for radiation detectors

Technology firm Kromek has signed a deal with the US Defense Threat Reduction Agency (DTRA) for the design and production of solid state detectors for deployment by the homeland security radiation detection market.

Work under the two-year $1.45m contract, which is scheduled to commence in July 2014, also involves optimisation of high sensitivity of next generation radiation detectors.

Kromek chief executive Arnab Basu was quoted by The Journal as saying that the latest contract award follows on from previous and current successful US Government programmes.

"With other potential future applications of this new technology in security, medical and civil nuclear radiation detection we believe that this programme can further cement Kromek’s detector technology platforms into global growing markets," Basu added.

Further, the firm bagged over $950,000 worth contracts from several clients for the delivery of nuclear detection products to consumers in the US and across the world.

Kromek has also commenced work on contracts worth £150,000 that are due over the upcoming 12 months from the UK Government’s innovation agency-Technology Strategy Board, involving the development of an improved detection system for breast imaging together with the UK’s Centre for Process Innovation.
