Northrop equips Iraqi Navy OSV with IBS and ITDLS systems

Northrop Grumman has equipped the first of two new offshore support vessels (OSVs) of the Iraqi Navy with its advanced communication, sensor and navigation systems.

The US Naval Sea Systems Command (NAVSEA) has received the first 60m-long Al Basrah (OSV 401) from RiverHawk Fast Sea Frames, on behalf of the Iraqi Navy in July 2012.

RiverHawk Fast Sea Frames had awarded a $7.4m contract to Northrop to provide delivered integrated bridge system (IBS) and Integrated tactical data link system (ITDLS) for both the OSVs in November 2010.

Northrop Grumman’s Maritime Systems business unit vice president Bill Hannon said, "These shipboard electronic systems will improve Iraq’s ability to provide its own national security."

Under the contract, Northrop will also provide communications; maritime situational awareness displays VisionMaster, TotalWatch multifunction workstations, chart radar, electronic chart display and information system, and other electronic systems.

The company will also provide programme management, design, procurement, assembly, and shipboard integration and testing as part of the contract.

RiverHawk Fast Sea Frames managing director Jake Ross said, "These are complex, multimission ships; it took real teamwork to build in all the quality and capability into these ships, and the partnership with Northrop Grumman has proven critical to that success."

The new vessel will be deployed alongside the previously delivered Iraqi navy patrol boats, to conduct maritime security operations off the Northern Arabian Gulf.

The second vessel of the class, Al Fayhaa (OSV 402), has recently completed sea trials and is scheduled for delivery in early 2013 while the first vessel will enter into service in late 2012.
