Smiths Detection to supply GasID units to Florida

Smiths Detection has been awarded a contract by the State of Florida to deliver GasID portable gas and vapour chemical identifiers for first responder.

Under the contract, Smiths Detection will provide 15 GasID portable identifiers to the county and city Hazardous Materials (HAZMAT) teams across Florida, to enhance local response capabilities.

The City of Fort Myers Fire Department assistant chief Randolph K. Jordan said the units provide capabilities for first responder needed to protect State and help ensure a safe environment for public.

"The inclusion of this technology in our equipment cache will greatly enhance each team’s ability to detect and identify unknown gases and vapors," Jordan added.

Capable of operating in extreme conditions, including intense heat and humidity, the GasID ruggedised portable system has been designed to identify suspect gases and vapours in minutes for HAZMAT response teams.

Smiths Detection Americas managing director and vice president of sales Lance Roncalli said, "First responders choose GasID because it rapidly provides critical information about threats, strengthening their ability to make informed decisions on how to best protect themselves and any community at risk."

Expanding the network of more than a dozen GasID units already in use throughout the state, the units have been designed to measure how gases and vapours interact with infrared light to identify potential danger to response teams.
