L-3 launches next-generation cabin baggage explosives detection system

L-3 Communications has launched a new high-throughput explosives detection system (EDS) for screening cabin bags at leading airports across the globe.

Dubbed ClearScan, the system has been especially developed to address emerging regulatory and operational requirements and also accommodates high-security checkpoint throughput and passenger demand for a streamlined screening experience.

The system uses computed tomography and advanced explosives detection algorithms to provide enhanced customer convenience by enabling travellers to leave liquids and electronics in their bags during security checks.

Apart from a scanning capacity of more than 500 bags per hour, the system also has a false alarm rate that dramatically lowers the requirement for an inconvenient and time-consuming bag search, significantly enhancing airport checkpoint throughput and efficiency.

The company has also unveiled a new checkpoint operations software solution, called IntelliCore, which delivers enhanced checkpoint security capabilities, including remote screening, real-time operational monitoring and reporting, image archive retrieval, and directed bag search, while facilitating risk-based security operations.

L-3 Security & Detection Systems president Tom Ripp said: "Enhancing security while facilitating passenger throughput, coupled with the need to help our customers control their operating costs, is a huge challenge.

The solution seamlessly combines checkpoint screening into a highly flexible operation that maximises efficiency and improves traveller satisfaction while enhancing security.

Both ClearScan and IntelliCore are designed to integrate with automated tray return systems.
